Learn Some Stuff! Have Some Fun! Take Some Great Photographs! It’s That Simple!
Along Minnesota’s North Shore & Wisconsin’s Bayfield County
Join Fine Art Landscape Photographer Gary Harris on a photo adventure of a lifetime; the magnificent costal environment of Lake Superior – Minnesota’s North Shore & Bayfield County Wisconsin, offering workshop participants a unique opportunity to capture magical images of superb coastal and state park scenery.
Here you will explore miles of Lake Superiors untamed coast with pebble, rock and sand covered beaches, towering cliffs, lighthouses, many state parks with waterfalls, lakes, streams, rivers, forests, and extensive meadows.
If you wish to dramatically elevate the emotional power of your images or just want to learn landscape photography in general in the shortest time possible, you must clearly understand the greatest challenges presented by photography.
While there will always be nuanced differences amongst the various genres, all Digital Photography possesses 5 Core Components of Competence!
I have created an affordable photo adventure, enabling you to learn these 5 Core Components of Photography all while standing in front of some of the most spectacular scenery in the Midwest.
At the end of the your 4 Day Photo Adventure, you will have learned:
- Intellectual Competence – Knowing your camera
- Motor Competence – Complete control over your camera & the images you create
- Processing Competence – How to edit an image using Lightroom 5 & Photoshop Elements 12 and create a workflow for editing an image
- Visionary Competence – Learn how to create emotionally powerful images using your Artistic Vision through (a) Observation (b) Experimentation (c) Integration
- Sensory Competence – Knowing the best time to create dynamic images & Learning how to predict when the best is going to happen
Also, if you have a Neutral Density Filter (preferably 10 Stop – 1000x), I will teach techniques on how to create dynamic images using my favorite and preferred method of photography, Long Exposures! I’m not talking several seconds, but several minutes.

-Excellent Participant To Instructor Ratio-
With a small group, you’re guaranteed to get some significant “one-on-one” time. This also means that I have maximum flexibility when taking photographs, allowing me to split up the group to allow everyone a chance to explore their own artistic vision and personal shooting goals.
-Focus On Making Great Images-
Unlike some other workshops, I don’t have a set itinerary. My goal is to make sure participants get the best photographs possible, and therefore I stay flexible and determine our day-by-day shooting schedule depending on the weather, the sky, and other local conditions. This way, we can go to a location when conditions are best to optimize our chances of getting great photographs.
-We Travel To The Best Locations In The Best Light-
Although I don’t have a set day – by – day schedule, I do have a “Shot List” of great places to photograph. I try to photograph each place when conditions are optimal for that location. Other tours take you to places based on a fixed schedule, whether conditions are good or not. With Gary Harris Images, you’ll be sure to visit each amazing location when conditions are most conductive to making great images. Although we cannot shoot at every location, here are some of the fantastic locations on my “Shot List”. (conditions permitting):
Stoney Point, Brighton Beach, Canal Park, Split Rock Lighthouse, Palisade Head, Gooseberry Falls State Park, Ellingson Island, and of course some secret locations I have discovered. We will also scout out new an amazing locations.
-I Work Hard To Make Sure You Get The Most Out Of Your Experience-
I try to fill each day with a mix of hands – on field instruction and digital darkroom techniques. We start at 2 PM on the first day of the workshop, meeting at a designated location, which you will receive in an E-Mail with directions. After a “Meet – and – Greet” session and presentation, we’ll get down to business, getting out to start making photographs! During the workshop, as a general rule – conditions permitting – we will be rising before dawn to photograph sunrise every morning with a break after the sunrise shoot for everyone to eat meals, rest and work on images. The workshop will resume again at 2PM, shooting if conditions are conductive to making good photos and staying out late for sunset. If not, we will do some “classroom” work, discussing digital processing techniques and sharing and critiquing image, and scouting out some new areas. I try to keep everyone busy so that you can get the most out of the workshop, but I realize that days can be very long, so I will work in rest time as needed. On the final day of the workshop, we’ll conclude after the morning sunrise shoot, to give participants time to check out and travel if necessary.
This is an outdoor nature photo workshop. So general good health and fitness will help maximize your comfort and enjoyment. That said, the activities I have planned should be well within the ability of people in moderate to good shape. Many locations we photograph are accessible from the road. We do have a number of short hikes to reach locations, most of which are less than one mile one way, and on mostly level ground. The North Shore of Minnesota is rocky, so we will on occasion encounter areas that are potentially uneven and slippery, but we’ll avoid anything that is dangerous. Of course, as with any outdoor activity, there is some associated risk from terrain, inclement weather, and other outdoor hazards, so I ask participants to sign a standard waiver prior to the start of the workshop.
-What’s Included and What’s Not-
Tuition includes workshop guiding and instruction only. Lodging, meals, travel arrangements, and expenses, park entrance fees, and any other expenses are all the responsibility of workshop participants. Please note that you will have to arrange for your own transportation to and from the workshop locations, although participants typically carpool to reach locations during the workshop. I always have room in my car for a few participants.
